Macroscopic Ontology in Everettian Quantum Mechanics

چکیده

Simon Saunders and David Wallace have proposed an appealing candidate semantics for interpreting linguistic communities embedded in an Everettian multiverse. It provides a charitable interpretation of our ordinary talk about the future, and allows us to retain a principle of bivalence for propositions and to retain the Law of Excluded Middle in the logic of propositions about the future. But difficulties arise when it comes to providing an appropriate account of the metaphysics of macroscopic objects and events. In this paper, I evaluate various metaphysical frameworks which might be combined with the SaundersWallace semantics. I conclude that the most appropriate metaphysics to underwrite the semantics renders Everettian quantum mechanics a theory of non-overlapping worlds.

Review for European Journal of Philosophy The Quantum Mechanics of Minds and Worlds

This book is about the central interpretative problem of quantum theory, the measurement problem, and the strategy for solving it that was suggested by Everett (1957). Barrett aims to explain these issues, with a minimum of technical apparatus; emphasizing instead the philosophical, especially metaphysical, aspects. In particular, he aims to survey in an even-handed way the various versions of ...

A thirder and an Everettian: a reply to Lewis’s ‘Quantum Sleeping Beauty’

This connection is often alluded to, but as far as we know Peter J. Lewis’s ‘Quantum Sleeping Beauty’ (2007a) is the first attempt to examine it explicitly. Lewis claims that the two debates are not independent: to be specific, he argues that accepting the Everettian interpretation of quantum mechanics requires you to be a ‘halfer’ about Sleeping Beauty, in opposition to the more widely accepte...

Understanding Deutsch’s Probability in a Deterministic Multiverse

Difficulties over probability have often been considered fatal to the Everett interpretation of quantum mechanics. Here I argue that the Everettian can have everything she needs from ‘probability’ without recourse to indeterminism, ignorance, primitive identity over time or subjective uncertainty: all she needs is a particular rationality principle. The decision-theoretic approach recently deve...

Against the Empirical Viability of the Deutsch-Wallace-Everett Approach to Quantum Mechanics

The subjective Everettian approach to quantum mechanics presented by Deutsch and Wallace fails to constitute an empirically viable theory of quantum phenomena. The decision theoretic implementation of the Born rule realized in this approach provides no basis for rejecting Everettian quantum mechanics in the face of empirical data that contradicts the Born rule. The approach of Greaves and Myrvo...

Quantum Probability and Decision Theory, Revisited

An extended analysis is given of the program, originally suggested by Deutsch, of solving the probability problem in the Everett interpretation by means of decision theory. Deutsch’s own proof is discussed, and alternatives are presented which are based upon different decision theories and upon Gleason’s Theorem. It is argued that decision theory gives Everettians most or all of what they need ...
